Imaginative Play

There is so much more to Imaginative play than just play.

As children play pretend, they explore relationships between family members, friends, teachers and learn more about how people interact. Playing as a doctor or a nurse, they imagine how physicians care for their patients. Playing with a dolls house they learn more about how parents feel about their children. Imaginative play helps develop empathy for others. If children can imagine how it feels to be left out of a game or to lose a pet they are better able to help those in need. They become more willing to play fair, to share, and too co-operate.

Small world and role play allows children of all ages to have time out from their busy day and allows them to use their vivid imaginations. Imagining oneself as a builder of skyscrapers or a superhero defending the planet is empowering to a child. It helps them develop confidence in their abilities and their potential.

By adding a few extra role play products to the learning environment it is possible to extend the learning and fun even further. Small world landscapes such as a realistic toy field, dolls house or a knight’s castle add additional sensory layers to the creative play. One of the easiest small worlds to create is a farm scene. What child doesn’t enjoy feeding and tending their farm animal figurines and of course making all those animal noises? By layering play with both everyday items and toys which facilitate learning, development and mimic real-life play landscapes. Children can act out/role play in a more realistic setting and apply every day learning to their scenes. Play Empire hope you like the wide range of small world and role play products to help you enhance these areas of learning within the early years foundation stage.
